Zach Benjamin may be the best-kept secret in the Tampa area.
Benjamin, a 6’5 wide receiver from Tampa Catholic that has been in contact with UMass, has been doing everything in his power to raise his stock since football season. In late March, he flew up to Detroit to compete in a combine. He was also a consistent contributor with Team Tampa during a recent 7-on-7 tournament.
Big County Preps, which keeps its eye on the Tampa football scene, recently named Benjamin as one of its 25 Players to Watch. I have spoken with Big County Preps a number of times on Twitter, and on one occasion they said that Benjamin would be a steal for UMass.
Other schools are taking notice, and Benjamin recently tweeted that he will attend the spring games for USF and UCF.
Here is Benjamin’s tweet:
Back in February, Benjamin said he liked USF:
I really liked USF. They have been looking at my film a lot and say they really like me. They like my size, but are still looking at stuff.
Perhaps Benjamin’s modest stats last season (13 catches, 260 yards and 5 touchdowns) are causing college coaches to wait and see. However, with reported interest from Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Kansas, it might be time for UMass to make an early extra push.
