2012 Commit: Devin Brown

(2012 Commit Devin Brown/hudl)

UMass picked up a verbal commitment from Devin Brown, a JUCO cornerback from Contra Costa College.

The news comes from a tip the Maroon Musket received, which was confirmed by a report in the Oakland Tribune. According to his Scout page, Brown has  ”three years to play two after the 2011 football season and will sign mid-year.”

This means that Brown won’t officially sign with the Minutemen until December.

According to the Tribune article Brown had three interceptions, 29 total tackles and one fumble recovery last season. Brown is 5’11 and 185 pounds and was First Team Bay Valley Conference last season. By the looks of his highlights, Brown is adept in zone and man-to-man coverage, and is not afraid to lower his shoulder on a bigger back.

Interestingly, at one point Brown was considering BYU as a viable option.

I think that means he can officially sign after the fall semester. What that means for playing time I don’t know. I assume he will be on the Spring Roster for next year and start playing fall of 2013, play 2014 and then graduate in 2015.

I get the 3 years to play 2 thing (he has a Red Shirt year available) but what’s with not being able to join until December?
