I personally like the logo, but I am even more happy that they changed their look as they transition to the FBS. Evidenced by the number of comments on this post compared to others, a cosmetic change can bring about a lot of talk about the program. Maybe none of this stir is seen outside of UMass Nation, but I think it will put football in the conversations of alumni and students (hopefully enough to fill a few more seats).

I love both the helmut and the uniforms!!

I am very happy with the new uniforms. I

  4. UConn Fan says:

UMass should have done a block M like UConn did with the block C. If were going to build the public U’s up in New England to be like the rest of the country, then we need to be on the same page and stir the rivalry up and do things alike. Logos would have been a good one to get together on. Fuck BC.

    1. sleepy sheep says:

I agree about the rivalry but what do common logos have to do with anything? Michigan and Ohio States helmet logos are nothing alike.

    2. SJGMoney says:

So because your helmet is ugly and plain our should be too? Crazy talk. What kind of toilet paper do you have in the locker room, I think we should have the same.

  5. Mel says:

Great looking helmet. Great looking logo. Go, UMass.

  6. locapo says:

It looks sharp in my eyes, the black and maroon go really well together. Go watch the Ohio video on how nuts these kids go for black unis, I’m sure our kids did the same when they first saw these. Plus, we could have these terrible logos on our helmet. http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2008/8/7/588392/the-10-worst-college-footb

  7. Bobby says:

Agree with Matt. It’s a horrible logo, there’s no argument.

I’d rather have a Gray Wolf.

  8. Rl says:

Eh. I actually preferred the version we saw in the accidental sneak peek we got in the alumni magazine. This is fine, I don’t hate it, but it’s not exciting, bold or unique. Its just a helmet

You will not see this helmet end up on this list: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1232532-the-50-most-instantly-recognizable-college-football-helmets

As a season ticket holder I’ll be cheering them but as a marketer I’m not thrilled with the logo choice. It fails to reinforce “UMass” or “Massachusetts” as well as it could. How many will read it as “Mass U?”

    1. SJGMoney says:

      None.

      1. Matt Raymond says:

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I’m not suggesting people will read it aloud as “Mass U”, of course. With “Mass” as the focal point it’s the first element that draws the eye. I think a simpler logo would have a greater impact and be more versatile for branding purposes.

        1. locapo says:

Don’t worry about the logo, UMass is still all over the unis, chest, pant, arms.

        2. SJGMoney says:

You asked how many people would read it as Mass U? I answered none. Do you need me to expound on that? Would three mopre sentences saying the same thing be more thoughtful? I’m trying to save Bob some server space!!!

And yes, your question did suggest people will read it as that, otherwise you wouldn’t have asked it. And in my opinion it was a silly question. And I could change “silly” with 85 other adjectives that would be more appropriate but I’m trying to be nice.

          1. locapo says:

            GO MASS U!

          2. Matt Raymond says:

@SJGMoney I admire your passion and appreciate the dialogue. Several fellow alums commented to me questioning the “Mass U” treatment which encouraged my question. You don’t agree which is reasonable. I appreciate your trying to be nice.

Looking forward to cheering alongside you at Gillette. I comment with my real name and link to my site so I’m easy to find if you want to continue the discussion without taking up additional server space : )

          3. SJGMoney says:

I guess I’ll be able to tell which of your friends reads it that way when I hear them cheering at the games:

Go. Go Mass. Go Mass U.
