(Mike Cox, a transfer running back from Michigan, will wear No. 5 this year for the Minutemen. Marcel Shipp and Steve Baylark, two of UMass' greatest running backs, also wore that number)

While at practice today, Mass Live’s Harry Plumer reported a few more player numbers.

He indicated that Notre Dame transfer Deion Walker will wear No. 3. While playing for the Irish he wore No. 1. Hafis Williams, also from Notre Dame, will wear No. 96. While at South Bend, he wore No. 94. Perhaps most importantly, Mike Cox, a transfer running back from Michigan who previously wore No. 15, will be wearing No. 5.

Most UMass fans understand the significance of that number.

Two of UMass’ greatest running backs – Marcel Shipp and Steve Baylark – wore No. 5 and combined ran for more than 11,000 yards. Of course, Cox won’t exactly have the time to reach those lofty numbers, but he will be asked to step in during a particularly important time for UMass football and produce.

According to Shane Huber, a 2013 linebacker who recently committed to UMass, the Minutemen will wear Black, Maroon and White adidas Techfit uniforms. He mentioned the new look on Twitter.

A number of bigger programs have made the switch to Techfit, including Nebraska, Texas A&M and Michigan. Here is a taste of the general style:

Now, I’m usually more of a traditional guy when it comes to uniforms, but I love this style. Also, I’m interested to see if UMass does something with its wide receiver gloves.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who likes the new look. Tyrell Judson, a New Jersey athlete that UMass has shown interest in, tweeted about how much he likes the new style.

The next step is for UMass to actually unveil these uniforms.

NOTES: Malik Smith, a Florida recruit that we’ve talked about before, has been talking to Coach Sollazzo. This is the second time he’s tweeted about chatting with Sollazzo. … From Harry Plumer’s piece, it appears that Kellen Pagel is still the starting QB for UMass. … UMass Athletics is covering Fall practice and posted a “sights and sounds” video from today’s practice.
