(2013 Recruit Roman Clay/Lancaster Online)
Roman Clay, a running back with a UMass offer, is weighing his options and taking his time.
A few weeks ago, Clay announced that he would make his decision on August 10. It sounded as if Clay was down to only a handful of schools. UMass and Kent State were the only FBS programs to extend an offer.
During the past few days, Penn State and Pitt entered the race, and Clay decided to hold off on the decision and see how the coming season plays out. Clay has had an impressive high school campaign so far, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and scoring more than 20 touchdowns in both his sophomore and junior seasons.
As soon as Clay’s decision to hold off was announced, Penn State fans from across the Twittosphere jumped in and, more or less, started recruiting the 5’11, 205-pound athlete. The Lancaster, Pa. product (less than three hours from State College) seems like the perfect target for a Penn State program that has been losing commits at a staggering rate.
UMass has been going after Clay for months, and back in April had him come to practice at Gillette. At one point, he was picking up some interest from North Carolina and Clemson.

NOTES: Kellen Pagel missed practice again. … According to UMass Athletics, Charley Molnar will be a guest at halftime for tomorrow’s Patriots/Saints preseason game. … UMass Athletics also had a feature on Redshirt Senior defensive lineman Chaz Thompson. … Harry Plumer had a chance to talk to Brandon Levengood, who sounds like he’s a bit more comfortable after last year’s kicking disaster. … Joey Colton, a freshman defensive back, tweeted that he will wear No. 46 next year.
