Sha’ki Holines, one of the first recruits to verbally commit to UMass, plans to decommit and verbal to UConn.
The news comes via Mass Live’s Terrence Payne, who spoke to Holines about his decision. Harry Plumer tweeted the same. ESPN Boston’s Brendan Hall confirmed the news.
Holines is the first recruit to decommit from UMass’ 2013 class.
After Holines verballed to UMass, the Huskies immediately jumped in and extended an offer to the 6’4, 230-pound defensive end/linebacker. Prior to UMass’ offer, the Springfield Commerce product was receiving little to no attention from other Division I schools. As it stands, UConn, Maine and UMass are the only schools to offer.
The news of Holines’ change of heart comes at a particularly interesting time. UMass and UConn will face off on the gridiron on August 30 to kick off UMass’ first season as an FBS team.
The game and recruiting battle are certainly the UMass’ first taste of big time college football.

Well, all things considered this probably could not have happened at a better time. I’m sure this will be used to the advantage of the coaching staff to fire up the team as we enter prep week.
I completely agree
As I mentioned on your recent post about UConn offering to Holines a few weeks back, verbal commitments don’t mean much. A lack of facilities and being in one of the worse conference of FBS will lose us some recruits to bigger programs. Let’s just hope we don’t go 0-12 this year…
They will take their lumps, but so far the recruiting is still going pretty well. Holines is a kid that was essentially ignored by other schools until UMass got involved, and now – I think – he wants to enjoy the recruiting process.
Very good point Bob
