Four Days after watching his team get crushed 45-6 by Indiana, Head Coach Charley Molnar wrote the following e-mail (via the UMass Athletic Marketing Department) to fans today.
Dear Students and Fans of UMass Football,
Thank you for sharing in our historic day at Gillette Stadium this past Saturday. Though the final score wasn’t what anyone who bleeds Maroon wanted, the afternoon was a great success and just the beginning of the story.
What really made the day an extraordinary event was YOU—the students who rocked the 35 buses down the Mass Pike from Amherst to Foxboro and back; fans who drove over with family and friends, tailgating from early in the morning to late at night; and anyone who bought a ticket to support the program. To all of you, we give a sincere thank you.
We hope to make this past weekend a starting point, not a high point, for home game attendance, noise, and excitement. There are four more games at Gillette this year—we need you to COME EARLY-BE LOUD-WEAR YOUR UMASS COLORS!
Go UMass!

Coach Molnar is the reason UMASS will succeed in this new venture. I am hoping he is used a little more in the marketing and selling of the program in the off weeks and off season. If you meet him you will be a convert!! Stay the course and things will get better. I’ll be at Gillette on September 29th have 10 others joining me,with more to be told they are going. UMASS fans need to step up. Don’t wait for desparate times or good times. That includes you-former football lettermen.
Classy move by the coach…
Nothing helps win and hold fans like a coach who can honestly say that the team is doing poorly but the fans are doing great.
When BG collapsed in 2008 their coach ripped into the fanbase for the low attendance. He was gone by the end of the week.
No one said it would be easy – it all starts with a single step!
Keep up the good work, your fresh attitude has breathed life into the UMass football brand. All of your tireless work will surely pay off. I for one and hopefully many more will be witnesses to your eventual success.
Go UMass!
