A decent amount going on out there, so I’ll just try to break it down as succinctly as possible: The Faculty Senate motion to reconsider FBS football failed by one vote. Both MassLive.com‘s Harry Plumer and the Gazette‘s Matt Vautour did an excellent job covering the meeting today both on Twitter and in long form. Again, this isn’t much of a story since even a passing vote wouldn’t force the school to do much of anything. Former UMass standout and current Baltimore Ravens safety James Ihedigbo will play in football’s biggest game for a second straight year. After playing in Super Bowl XLVI for The New England Patriots against the New York Giants, Ihedigbo will be playing against the 49ers on Sunday Super Bowl XLVII. A Letter from the Friends of UMass Football

The Friends of UMass Football have sent a letter to the Faculty Senate of the University of Massachusetts regarding the football program. The organization, which ”provides assistance and service in order to help promote, strengthen and develop the interests of the UMass Football program through its membership,” provided the Maroon Musket with a copy of the letter: – To the Faculty Senate of The University of Massachusetts Amherst: The Friends of UMass Football organization has been asked by the UMass Amherst Faculty Senate to state their case with regards to the UMass Football program participation at the FBS level of competition. Lloyd Smith, a 2013 dual-sport athlete, told the Maroon Musket that he has an offer from UMass and considers it one of his top schools. Smith is a strong safety and wide receiver for Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania. He is also a basketball recruit. Smith said he is waiting for finalize a date to visit with Roderick Plummer, UMass’ special teams coordinator and running backs coach. He said he is also looking at Penn State and Wagner.
