Dave Johnson to Coach Offensive Line/Run Game

(Dave Johnson)

Dave Johnson, a coach with more than 27 years of collegiate experience, has been hired by UMass as its new offensive line coach and run game coordinator, according to a source with knowledge of the hiring process.

Johnson will be joining the team immediately.

FootballScoop.com, a site that follows the comings and goings of football coaches, initially reported that he was hired, and the Maroon Musket was able to confirm the hire and position. Johnson will replace Ron Hudson, who left UMass to coach Nevada in mid-January.

Johnson was last the tight ends coach for the University of Cincinnati. Prior to joining the Bearcats, he was the offensive line coach at West Virginia from 2008 – 2010. Check out the rest of his resume here.

Well Bumpa n ’91 IHere is another view

It would seem that if you look at where this new coach has been previously the Offense and the positions he has coached has either done well or very well. When I say well I mean like Bowl-ing level good for these teams.

If he can help to develop the OL over this season the future looks good since he will have 3-4 yrs with most of this core group to turn them into a good, solid unit.

The other point I’d offer is what I euphemistically call The Belicheck Effect. Here in NE it is now expected that the Pat’s will roll through most every team they play and will be in the hunt for a super bowl berth.

Then any team that does not play at this level is looked upon poorly and too many folks look to watch the Pats instead.

If you are someone who is from Cincy or nearby in W Va well . . . . . they do not have much to cheer for like we do with all of the sports successes this region has had so the expectations for their college teams is pretty over the top – even if they are a bowl team and then the coaches get blasted like these posts show justifiably or not.

The O n D lines will have to get better for the team to do well. We will need to see some drives by the offense – especially with the run game contributing. And we need to see a fair amount of 3 n outs brought on by our defense. We absolutely cannot have other teams QB’s throwing and watching their spiral go down field. We need our defensive front to squeeze their QB and make them uncomfortable.

Do this and the results will be better.

For some of us in Sec 109 we like the hire (of course we look at the glass as half ful a lot of the time too).
