Delaire Transfers to Towson, Notes

(Defensive End Ryan Delaire/UMass Athletics)

Ryan Delaire, a defensive end who was reportedly interested in leaving the UMass football team, has transferred to Towson.

Towson listed Delaire as part of its 23-player recruiting class.

Since Delaire transferred down to a FCS program, he will be able to play next season. He has two years of eligibility left.

Delaire will be best remembered for his game-clinching sack during UMass’ 22-14 win over Akron on Nov. 11. The Zips were facing a short fourth down with a 90 seconds left in the game, and Delaire was able to track down Zips quarterback Dalton Williams to give the Minutemen their first win as a FBS program.

He had 19 tackles, five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks during 2012.

Speaking of Towson, Antonio Harris, a lineman who originally committed to UMass, also signed with the Tigers. We knew he flipped his verbal, and it looks like he made it official.

ESPN Boston’s Brendan Hall confirmed a few more preferred walk-ons for UMass. He tweeted that Joe Tyo, an offensive lineman that we’ve talked about before, is committed. Hall added three other guys to the list: Andrew Ellis (LB, Barnstable High School), Costa Toubekis (OL, Dexter High School) and Will Giggi (OL, Medfield High School).

Here’s a list of all the walk-ons currently committed to UMass:

  • Nate Crutchfield, QB: Montclair High School (N.J)
  • Klysmann Afonso, WR: Jireh Prep (N.C.)
  • Garrett FitzGerald, OL: Catholic Memorial High School (Mass.)/Saint Anslem College (N.H.)
  • Logan Laurent, K/P: Exeter High School (N.H.)
  • Joe Tyo, OL/DL: Dennis-Yarmouth High School (Mass)
  • DuVaughn Beckford, DB: Nantucket High School (Mass)/Assumption College (Mass)
  • Nick Valles, RB: Danvers High School (Mass)
  • Michael Dowe, Jr., DL: Cromwell High School (Conn)/Western New England University
  • Dillon Tighe, WR: Arundel High School (Md.)
  • Markus Colin, K: Allentown High School (N.J.)
  • Andrew Ellis, LB: Barnstable High School (Mass)
  • Costa Toubekis, OL: Dexter High School (Mass)
  • Will Giggi, OL: Medfield High School (Mass)

It’s never too early to start talking 2014 recruiting. Rivals’ Shawn Brown indicated that Daquan Worley, a defensive back/running back from Pennsylvania, picked up a UMass offer – his first. … Michael Bradley from Deep South Recruiting tweeted that UMass is showing interest in Isaiah McKenzie, a multi-faceted athlete from Florida.

I believe Will Giggi is from Medfield and not Medford as listed. Minor issue and great to have some Mass kids around.

You are correct – thanks Andy!

  2. Larry says:

Best of luck to him. Hope Towson works out.

some other details on the new listed preferred walk ons

Giggi 6’7 275 probably being looked at OL. Led to believe either his father or relative played at UMaine as a OL. Played at Medfield (public HS) near Boston

Toubekis 6’2 275 probably a C or G. Started off at Westwood (public HS) and finished at Dexter School (private hs) – both near Boston.

Ellis is 5’11-6 230 will be a likely MLB or a FB. Played at Barnstable (public hs)on Cape Cod.

Hope they all play well at UMass.

Thanks for adding that Larry. I didn’t realize how big that Giggi kid is. It’s good to see Molnar adding a bunch of Mass kids.

No probs. Least I can do considering all you put out on this blog. Which I’d offer is pretty sweet indeed – especially when compared to many others.

Trying my best to keep expectations under control but it seems like we have a good incoming class with many who should be able to contribute as freshman and many more who will be contributing soon.

Looking forward to seeing the program continue to grow.

At least for me -and for others too- we really hope we improve in how we rush the ball and how we keep the other team from rushing. Would offer that it would seem that we will run the ball better this year than last but will still have room for improvement in this regard.

Concerned with how we will slow down other teams running game. Would offer we need to develop players who can set the edge and hold up some of the OL’s the team will face week in and week out. Also having to replace a MLB who played almost every down last year could make for some tough times. IMHO – Having some experienced DL’s (Byrne, Clemons, Potvin & Maynes) is good for the inside DL but how we will do against the OT’s is a little uncertain.

The best defense is often the other team not having the ball and a good running game sure helps.

        Pound The Rock ! ! !

I need to get you a byline soon.

          1. Larry says:

Thanks…..You may want to consider SJG$$$ too.

My Byline would be “The Optimist (except when it concerns Linebackers who refuse to fill holes!!)”

Ryan, good luck in life, thanks for being a part of the first of many wins.

  4. ms says:

Too bad. We could have used him. Good player. Good luck to him at Towson.
