Jason Smith, a 2013 defensive end/tight end from Hackensack High School in New Jersey, has committed to UMass.
Smith mentioned his commitment on Twitter:
Smith told the Maroon Musket that he is part of the 2013 class, but he will go to East Coast Prep in Great Barrington, Mass. during the fall and join the Minutemen for the 2014 Spring Semester. He will be a scholarship athlete.
When asked what he would play at UMass, the 6’5, 235-pound athlete indicated that he was ready to fill in where needed.
“Honestly wherever they want me. I can play on both sides of the ball – tight end and defensive end – so wherever they want me I’ll play,” he said.
He added that he chose UMass because of the “family atmosphere.” He indicated that UMass assistant Dave Sollazzo was involved with his recruitment and followed him since his sophomore year.
“We made a bond that will never break and my parents also feel comfortable and also love him. I can’t wait to come and attend the college,” Smith said. “(UMass) football is on the rise, and people should beware.
“Oh yea and you can’t forget UMass is rated No. 1 best food out of all the colleges in the nation.”

I love that we are getting a good reputation in New Jersey. NJ has some of the best talent in the country and it’s very important that we have a good relationship with the coaches. Don’t underestimate the impact of Victor Cruz when it comes to recruiting NJ kids, they all know he went to UMass.
is this what they considered gray shirting?
The short answer is Yes but he could have problems with admissions so this PG time could help with that too.
Will have to wait n see.

The Dining Commons have become serious business. My son will be wrapping up sophomore year and I’ve had the chance to join him for a lunch or two at Berkshire DC. If you haven’t seen what’s going on since the early 90′s (or mid 80′s in my case!), you wouldn’t even believe it. They have around 20 different food stations, cook-to-order items etc. Of course if your kid has the “unlimited” meal plan it runs about $5200.00 per year!
Thanks Andy! Had I known I would’ve stopped into the DC on Saturday (took the wife and kids to the Hockey game).

Could not agree more with your take on this. Went to the Brown lacrosse game a few weeks back and went to the Worcester DC and the choices were amazing. I asked both the staff and a couple of students if what was being offered was for something else or was this the everyday type of thing and was told this is how it is now.
A whole lot different from when I was there.
Much more professional.
