The UMass football program is trying to widen its recruiting pipeline down at Montclair High School in New Jersey.
The Minutemen offered three different Mounties during its second Junior Day, including Darius Slade (ATH), Elijah Robinson (ATH) and Austin Stevens (DE). The news comes from a variety of Twitter sources, including Todderick Hunt, Shawn Brown and former Mounty and current Minuteman Nate Crutchfield.
UMass is the first to offer Slade, a 2014 do-everything player for the Mounties. Check out his hudl highlights here. Robinson is a 2015 athlete who plays a number of skill positions and also runs track. The Minutemen were the first to offer the 6’1, 170-pound athlete.
If nothing else, the Minutemen can offer all three athletes a degree of familiarity. Both Crutchfield and Sam Zeff went to Montclair High School and joined the UMass program this semester.
Aside from the above-listed athletes, there were a number of recruits who tweeted about their visit to Gillette Stadium for Junior Day. We heard that there were more than 200 athletes at Gillette, including some high-end local talent. Here is an (obviously) non-exhaustive list of guys that were down in Foxborough:
- Alec Petrillo (OL)
- Mike Reichwein (TE)
- Nicholas Imperato (QB)
- Jack Becker (QB)
- Kishon Banks (LB)
- Louis Dibileo (TE)
- Shawn Cavallaro (ATH)
- Alec Vignola (QB)
- Isaac Yiadom (WR)
- Bryce Boggs (WR)
- Andrew Ford (QB)
- Stephen Barmore (QB)
- Kevin Cohee Jr. (LB)
- Cody Williams (QB)
Aside from Junior Day stuff, we also heard about a few more offers out there.
- Niquekko Cook, a defensive end and starter for the all-name team, picked up an offer from the Minutemen, according to Rivals. UMass is the first and only school to offer, but there are several other schools poking around. Cook is 6’5 and 235 pounds.
- Juwann Winfree, a highly sought-after recruit from New Jersey, picked up an offer earlier this month, according to 247 Sports. UMass is just one of a number of schools pursuing this four-star 2014 athlete. How interested is the rest of the country? Well, let’s just say that Michigan offered.
- Tyrell Smith, an offensive and defensive lineman from Don Bosco Prep, picked up an offer from UMass. Both Shawn Brown and Todderick Hunt tweeted about the offer. The 6’5, 250-pound athlete only has a UMass offer, but it looks like some other big programs are starting to take notice.
Other than that … pretty quiet weekend.
